Tampa Bay Hospital C-Section Rates 2019

Do you know the c-section rate for your hospital?

Without a doubt, your hospital of choice has a huge impact on the outcome of your birth experience. There are numerous factors to consider when choosing your hospital, and their cesarean rate should be at the top of the list.

Experts explain more in this article from Consumer Reports

“While being overweight, diabetic, or older can make it more likely for a woman to have a c-section, THE BIGGEST RISK FACTOR is “the hospital a mother walks into to deliver her baby, and how busy it is,” says Neel Shah, M.D., an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School, who has studied c-section rates in the U.S. and around the world….

While many medical institutions across the U.S. are now taking steps to prevent unnecessary c-sections, women themselves can take steps to reduce their own risk of having one, including through their choice of hospital. “

The Federal Healthy People 2020 goal for low-risk, first-time c-section deliveries is 24.7%.

There are times when c-sections are absolutely necessary, of course. However, some medical interventions increase the risk of c-section. Therefore, the goal is to care for women in labor so that indications for c-sections do not develop. When c-sections are not medically necessary, they may be more likely to harm mothers and babies than to help them.

Below are the c-section rates for the hospitals in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco, stats collected and reported by Florida.HealthFinder.gov. Keep in mind, this is the total c-section rate, which includes low-risk and high-risk deliveries divided by all live births.
