5 Simple Steps to Your Placenta Encapsulation

  • 1 Plan Ahead

Let your care team and birth providers know your intention to keep your placenta. Tampa Bay hospitals are familiar with this request and all hospitals in our service area allow it. Each may have its own release procedures.

  • 2 Transport Home

Using your provided transport kit and our instructions, you’ll safely bring your placenta from the birth facility to your home and store it properly in your refrigerator until your specialist arrives.

  • 3 DAY ONE: Inspection and Steaming

Your specialist inspects and thoroughly rinses your placenta, then steams it to minimize bacteria. Your baby’s umbilical cord is set aside for preservation. The placenta is then dehydrated for 24 hours at temperatures above 160°F to thoroughly remove moisture and inhibit bacterial growth, following safe food handling procedures.

  • 4 DAY TWO: Grinding and Encapsulation

Once fully dried, your placenta is ground into a fine powder and placed into small, vegan capsules. Each capsule is individually wiped for a clean, tasteless experience. Your preserved umbilical cord is carefully packaged and returned to you as a keepsake.

  • 5 Handoff and Guidance

You receive your capsules, detailed consumption guidelines, your cord keepsake, and your placenta tincture if selected. Your specialist cleans and sanitizes your kitchen before she leaves.

OPTIONAL ADD-ON

Placenta Tincture

A placenta tincture is a highly concentrated liquid extract made by infusing dehydrated placenta powder in gluten-free, 60-proof (or higher) vodka. Many parents choose a tincture as a way to extend the use of their placenta long after their capsules have been consumed.

The tincture matures over six weeks, does not require refrigeration, and has an indefinite shelf life when stored in a cool, dark place. It may be used during times of stress, anxiety, emotional lows, or major life transitions by placing drops under the tongue or adding them to water, juice, or tea.

Available exclusively as an add-on to placenta encapsulation.

Why Families Recommend Buddha Belly Doulas Again & Again...

We follow a gold standard for safe Placenta Encapsulation.

We are rigorous about safety, handling, and preparation at every step. Here’s why our in-home-only process sets the standard.

CERTIFIED SPECIALISTS

Trained in OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, Universal Precautions, safe food handling, and certified as Postpartum Placenta Specialists through ProDoula.

IN-HOME PREPARATION ONLY

Your placenta is never transported off-site. Yours is the only placenta in the building, with zero risk of cross-contamination or mix-ups.

HOSPITAL-GRADE SANITATION

We use hospital-grade disinfectants and CDC-standard protocols for bloodborne pathogen containment. Most supplies are single-use and disposed of after your session. Any reusable equipment is thoroughly disinfected in accordance with CDC guidelines for bloodborne pathogens before being used again.

FULL TRANSPARENCY

You are welcome to observe every step of the process or remain completely hands-off. Nothing is hidden, and your level of involvement is entirely up to you. If you choose to observe, your specialist will gladly explain what she is doing and answer any questions along the way.

Are there risks to placenta encapsulation?

We believe in empowering you with honest, balanced information. Here's what is currently known about potential risks of placentophagy.

RISK OF CONTAMINATION

Like any food product, the placenta must be properly stored, handled, and prepared to minimize the risk of bacterial growth. Potential risks also include exposure to bloodborne pathogens if proper infection-control procedures are not followed. Our in-home process, strict temperature controls, single-use supplies, and CDC-standard infection-control procedures are designed to minimize these risks.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS

While many women report positive experiences, some report headaches, nausea, dizziness, jitteriness, or stomach upset. In one documented CDC case, a newborn developed a GBS infection that may have been associated with improperly prepared placenta capsules. While the exact source of the infection remains unknown, the case highlights the importance of proper preparation and handling practices.

LIMITED RESEARCH

Scientific research on placentophagy remains limited. While many parents report benefits, most of the available evidence is anecdotal rather than based on large-scale clinical studies. The American Pregnancy Association notes that placenta encapsulation “appears to carry no inherent risk if ingested solely by the mother.” We encourage you to research this option carefully and discuss it with your healthcare provider before making a decision.

Not at all. It's completely your choice. You're welcome to observe any part of the process, handle your placenta with gloves, or stay cozied up with your newborn and have nothing to do with it. Your specialist is happy to work around whatever feels right for you.
